Ending Human Trafficking Where We All Work and Live.

One Trained Employee Changed the Course of a Teenager's Life

A teenage girl named Olivia* had been lured to Los Angeles by a "friend" to attend a party. Once there, a trafficker took her ID, phone, and cash, gave her illicit drugs, and forced her to have sex for money. Olivia was not free to leave and feared for her life if she tried.

After several days, Olivia managed to escape and made her way to Hollywood-Burbank Airport (BUR). Visibly shaken and with nothing to her name, she approached an airline ticket counter and told a customer service agent she was trying to get home. The agent had received Freedom Insight's human trafficking training and immediately recognized the warning signs. Knowing how to respond, the employee promptly contacted airport authorities to assess the situation and get Olivia the help she needed.

Once on scene, the officers took Olivia into protective custody and prioritized her safety and immediate needs. They contacted her mother, arranged for Olivia to fly home that day, and ensured that she would receive follow-up medical and psychological care.

Olivia's story shows the difference just one trained employee can make. But it also shows how airports can become safe spaces where victims and survivors are recognized and connected to help.

Freedom Insight equips frontline employees in airports and other high-risk environments to recognize and respond to potential trafficking. At less than $5 per employee trained, even a modest investment can equip thousands of frontline workers with the knowledge and tools to help connect victims to safety.

It's More Than Just a Card. It's a Lifeline.

More airport employees are equipped to detect human trafficking and know how to respond.

When Police Chief Edward Skvarna issued Freedom Insight's human trafficking indicator cards to Hollywood Burbank (BUR) airport staff, he saw an opportunity to create a "force multiplier" for the safety and freedom of trafficking victims moving through the airport. Before Freedom Insight partnered with BUR to bring training and pocket cards to the entire workforce, only police were trained.

"Now, instead of ten sets of eyes looking for the problem, we have more than a hundred sets of eyes looking for the problem," shared Skvarna.

This summer, Freedom Insight distributed 8,000 pocket-sized trafficking indicator cards in FIFA World Cup host city airports including BUR, San Francisco International (SFO), and San José Mineta International (SJC).

8,000 airport employees now have a tool to keep human trafficking awareness close at hand.

Small enough to fit in a wallet or airport badge holder, the cards give employees an easy way to reference trafficking indicators and airport-specific reporting procedures whenever they need them. From ticket agents and skycaps to bus drivers, food service teams, and custodians, airport employees now have critical information at their fingertips when they see something that does not look right.

"Our SFO employees are uniquely positioned to identify and report the behaviors linked to human trafficking, and this latest initiative puts vital resources – customized by language and work area – in a pocket-sized format."

— Mike Nakornkhet, SFO Airport Director
