Showing up in the fight against human trafficking can look different for everyone. Find out how you can make a difference and activate in your community.
Human trafficking involves controlling a person through force, fraud, or coercion. Traffickers may exploit the victim for their labor, commercial sex, or both.
Here are 6 things you can do to step up your activation in the fight against local trafficking. Every step counts!
Human trafficking exists in your community. Human trafficking is rampant across the United States and it’s in your neighborhood. It’s found in local businesses and especially in what we call Frontline Industries — airports, apartments, and hotels — where trafficking victims are forced to move, work, and sleep everyday.
Human traffickers use air travel as a key part of their business. Human traffickers need speed to run a successful business. They rely on air travel to take their victims and move them quickly – far away from an area that they’re familiar with and far away from their support network. This movement makes it less likely that the victim is going to know how to ask for help or try to escape.
In 2020, 42% of human trafficking victims were brought into trafficking by a member of their own families and 39% were recruited via an intimate partner or a marriage proposition – Polaris Project
